Family’s gift of thanks to dementia charity Lost Chord

MARGARET Coverdale spent the last 12 years of her life as a resident at Laydon Court care home in Rotherham.
And it was there that, with the support of dementia charity Lost Chord, she discovered a love for music that gave both her and her family comfort and support.
Lost Chord is the South Yorkshire based charity whose professional musicians have been visiting Laydon Court since the charity was launched more than 15 years ago.
And following Margaret’s death, daughters June, Carol and Ann decided that the funeral collection should go towards Lost Chord, helping to give people like their mum the chance to discover the restorative power of music.
“It has been our pleasure and privilege to witness the work of Lost Chord,” said June, speaking on behalf of the family.
“Dementia is such a destructive illness which has a devastating impact upon the lives of sufferers, and inflicts so much personal loss, so it is wonderful to see the efforts that Lost Chord have made to redress the balance by bringing musical sessions that offer something that is so positive, joyful and uplifting.
‘We have been amazed to see the therapeutic benefits, stimulating people who had previously been withdrawn or unresponsive, to become animated and to communicate through the music with obvious enjoyment.
“Not only are Lost Chord’s musicians highly skilled and accomplished at their craft, they are also very special people and skilful communicators who treat everyone with the utmost respect, and dignity, and demonstrate such sensitivity, kindness, and compassion.
“They ensure that everyone is drawn in and included, and encouraged to participate. It is heart-warming to see the joy that this brings.
‘We have often left with tears in our eyes and lumps in our throats, but with hearts full of joy and gratitude that such an organisation exists.”
Receiving a cheque for £505 from the family – along with an extra donation of £25 – Lost Chord Chief Executive Helena Muller commented: “We are delighted that Margaret’s family remembered Lost Chord at this difficult time for them and really appreciate their commitment and enthusiasm for Lost Chord.
“It is thanks to the generosity of people like Margaret’s family that we are able to continue providing events that really do make a difference to the lives of people living with dementia.
