Lost Chord UK has launched a groundbreaking initiative in the heart of Maltby, bringing the transformative power of music and football together in a project aimed at improving physical activity, reducing social isolation, and creating a stronger sense of community. Developed in partnership with Rotherham United Community Trust’s “More Than Football” initiative, “Music That Moves” is all about energising the Maltby community in a unique and accessible way.
Why “Music That Moves” Matters for Maltby
Like many communities, Maltby faces challenges related to physical inactivity and social isolation, particularly among older adults and those with limited mobility. Recognising these barriers, Lost Chord UK created “Music That Moves” to provide a fun, community-centered entry point to physical activity, incorporating the joy of music to make the experience inclusive and accessible to all.
By holding dementia-friendly, free sessions within a 10-minute walk of most participants, “Music That Moves” brings together Maltby residents to sing, move, and connect. The sessions provide an interactive, social environment that makes physical activity feel approachable, while fostering friendships and enhancing well-being.
A Unique Blend of Music and Football
“Music That Moves” introduces participants to light, football-related activities, such as walking football, within the framework of music sessions. This progressive approach allows participants to gradually build confidence and comfort in a supportive and enjoyable setting, paving the way for long-term, sustainable changes in health and activity levels.
Creating Meaningful Connections through Shared Experiences
This initiative is about more than just movement—it’s about creating a lasting sense of community and belonging. By connecting Maltby residents through music and movement, Lost Chord UK aims to build a foundation for sustained health and well-being, while strengthening the bonds between neighbours.
Jean Collingwood, CEO of Lost Chord UK, explains the inspiration behind the project and the unique role music plays in football culture:
“Music is the glue in football, from the opening ceremony at major tournaments to local chants for your favourite teams. Passions run high as a source of pride, joy, and excitement, and it’s a universal connector. Singing together with strangers connects us in memories that never leave us. This plays an important part in our work supporting people with dementia—not only sportspeople affected by it but family life around it.
Maltby is where Lost Chord UK began, so it holds a unique place in our hearts. Through Music That Moves, we’re bringing back the fun, the memories, and the sense of community that music can inspire. Just as football brings people together, music is a universal connector—it unites us, lifts our spirits, and creates memories that never fade. For us, this isn’t just about health; it’s about shared experiences that bring joy and pride to the community.”
Community Partnership at Its Best
The success of “Music That Moves” is made possible by the dedication and collaboration of community partners. In addition to Rotherham United Community Trust’s More Than Football initiative, the project is supported by Sport England, the Football Foundation, and local organisations like St. Bartholomew’s Church, the Salvation Army, and Rotherham Borough Council. Together, these partners are helping Lost Chord UK create a program that is free, dementia-friendly, and accessible to all.
